I’m with Stupid

In light of the news that some donut from the Only Way is Chelsea or This is Essex (or something) posted on Twitter, mourning the passing of Kim Jong Il, not realising that 1) he was a cruel tyrant who oppressed his own people and 2) his death could herald further political uncertainty and unpredictability, I can’t help but wondering, when did we start celebrating stupidity?

Don’t get me wrong, I like to play the airhead now and again. And I’m not what you’d consider the sharpest tool in the box, but I do try to keep up with current events, even if it is just in bitesized chunks from the Associated Press Twitter feed.

With real time social media, there’s no excuse for ignorance at what’s going on in the world. But these flipping people are paid to live in a self important bubble Tthe same people, going to the same parties, telling each other how fabulous they all are. They seemingly have no general knowledge, no skills and no interests beyond fake tanning and partying. And what’s worse is that they’re winning BAFTA’s and people seem to like and celebrate the ignorance of these ‘stars’.

People watching because it’s car crash TV or in a kitsch, ironic way? Yep, that I get. I watch my fair fill of shit telly. But a lot of people seem to watch as they aspire to the ‘status’ (guffaw) or want to emulate their lives.

Bah to that.

I know there have always been Z list ‘slebs and I might sound like a cynical old bag but I remember when even your Z list had a work ethic or a skill…or at least had the imagination to pretend they had.  Now they aren’t even clever enough to do that.
